Having a fantastic time getting away from it all and only thirty minutes from the city. The City is Canberra and whilst there is plenty to enjoy in Canberra with its very strong cultural life and restaurant culture for a mere half hour drive you can have a fantastic country weekend with wine, food, galleries and antiques amidst the beauty of the southern tablelands of NSW.
The region around the pretty small town of Bungendore is revealing an increasing number of wineries producing some wines of real quality. Lark Hill Winery owned by the formidable team of David and Sue Carpenter has led the charge. Established in 1978, Lark Hill now consistently produce wonderful, richly flavoured wines with finely tempered, silky tannins and subtle oak treatment. Recent vintages of their pinot noir and merlot have built on a very good reputation that gathered momentum through the mid-1990s. Both wines consistently attract the most serious of attention from wine heads. The pinot noir remains remarkably affordable and provides a really pleasurable and thought provoking experience for those drinkers interested in the Antipodes pursuit of the holy grail of producing great pinot noir.
The Carpenters have also lent their support newer wineries in the immediate region that are also producing good results such as MiLiMANi. I particularly enjoyed their recent sauvignon blanc and reisling and the wonderful views from the vineyard with picnic facilities provides a beautifully tranquil picnic location. Other wineries in the region ringing the beautiful, brooding Lake George include Gidgee Estate Wines, Affleck and Hillbrook Estate.
The powerful Madew Family have developed a very stylish visitor experience with fine tasting rooms to enjoy their excellent range of wines with the very well regarded 120 seat restaurant ‘grapefoodwine’, again overlooking Lake George.
All wineries are within a half hour drive back to Canberra but much more preferable is to stay overnight in....
