The winners of the a tasting pack from Macedon Ranges was Geoff and Cheryl Elith of Mosman, NSW, who told us of a “tasting” experience at Mudgee's Miramar Wines, some time back.
“We had started tasting early, around 9.30 on a June morning, first in to make the acquaintance of the gent looking after tastings at Miramar. Following an interesting chat, and about half way through our tasting, punctuated by warming trips to the pot belly stove, one of those strange box like European station wagons arrived. Its driver fair bounded across the car park into the tasting room.
Having announced considerable knowledge of all matters “wine” and with a clear display of expertise to his partner, he swirled, swished and nosed his way with great ceremony in front of our tasting gent, through to a Sauvignon Blanc.
With a gush of enthusiasm he exclaimed, “I say, this is a herbaceous little number, isn’t it?”, seeking a response from who he clearly believed, was the winemaker.
Alas, the gent behind the tasting counter explained that his son was the winemaker, and personally knew nothing about the wines except to line them up from left to right in the order his son had told him.
Deflated, our knowledgeable friend finished his “herbaceous little number”, and left! Strangely no sight of our expert for the rest of the day.”
Thanks to Geoff and Cheryl for their insight into the finer points of wine tasting.
STOP PRESS: Late mail has it that Geoff and Cheryl had a ball, enjoying their view and tasting pack with friends. “Macedon Ranges is a region we will certainly take a look at when we’re in Melbourne next.” says Cheryl. There’s the hint Geoff, see you down south !
